ALPACAS
SoL began as a small family alpaca farm. We learned everything we could about alpacas. We took classes, went to seminars and visited alpaca farms and then our first six alpacas arrived in 2011. We started by breeding a few alpacas and selling some products made of their fiber. However, once a few babies were born, they immediately became part of our family and we could never bring ourselves to sell them, or any of our animals like we had originally planned. This was the first sign that something was amiss, and as we continued through the processes of raising animals as/for products, we began to question what we had been taught about farming, and started to feel uncomfortable with what we were doing. Ultimately, it was the alpacas who were our first teachers and the catalysts that lead to us educate ourselves about all animals who are used as products, and what it means for them in our world. Once we had this revelation, we quickly ended our business, began our vegan journey, made the decision to use our time and space to rescue farmed animals, and share what we learned with others in hopes of creating positive change for the animals. Most of the alpacas at SoL were part of our original herd, and they will never be seen by anyone as a “product” ever again.
